Without understanding all the links between components it's tricky to predict. My guess is you didn't send the right ports through your router. By default, no router lets the Internet reach internal servers.

Check if you're on the same network or different ones. Are you linked to a router or attempting a direct link? On separate networks, have you attempted to forward ports for the Minecraft server?
