I recently assembled a PC using a Ryzen 5 5600G with a 4400 MHz processor and a 16 GB GSKILL kit. Initially, I activated the XMP profile, which allowed it to run at 4000 MHz, though it restarted several times before starting. Now, when I try to boot at 3600 or 3800 MHz without XMP enabled, the system won’t power on. The fans spin and light up but nothing appears on the screen. However, setting it to 3200 MHz works. Is 3200 the maximum I should use? I’ve noticed others running it between 3600-3800 and even 4000 MHz. Could there be an issue with my configuration? Here are the specs: CPU – Ryzen 5 5600G, RAM – GSKILL 2x8 GB, 4400 MHz motherboard, Gigabyte B550 M. DS3H SSD, 970 EVO plus 500 GB. Note: When adjusting XMP speeds, I changed the Infinity Fabric to half the rated speed.

High speed kits usually need more than just turning XMP on. You’ll likely have to adjust many settings manually. Ensure you use a motherboard designed for that specific memory type and a CPU with a capable memory controller. Refer to overclocking resources carefully.

Ryzen offers an infinite fabric that aligns memory speeds directly with the clock speeds by default. Achieving stable performance at 2000MHz is uncommon, which may explain the difficulties you faced with higher frequencies. Simply turning off XMP and adjusting the clockspeed isn't feasible; you must configure the correct voltages and timing, all defined within the XMP profile. You'll need to either maintain XMP active and adjust the memory speeds, or opt for asynchronous operation with the infinity fabric. Running in this async mode usually incurs a slight performance cost, though the 5600X uses a unified CCD architecture so any noticeable difference is unlikely.

The CPU officially supports RAM speeds up to 3200MHz, but achieving higher frequencies requires manual overclocking—results aren’t guaranteed. I’ve raised my RAM from 3200 to 3600 and set Infinity Fabric to auto; it runs smoothly at around 1800MHz. If you disable XMP, you’ll need to adjust the voltage manually, ideally around 1.35V, but keep it below 1.4V for safety (except for Samsung B-DIMM).
