You're facing a common issue when expanding your OpenVPN setup on an Asus RT-AC5300. The router is limited to 5 profiles, but you have 8. You can try enabling Telnet to access the router's Linux OS and look for the configuration settings that define the profile limit. Once there, adjust the setting to allow up to 5 profiles. Let me know if you need more specific guidance!

You should reach out to ASUS to get a firmware that doesn’t restrict the number of VPN profiles or swap it for a superior option like AdvancedTomato or any OpenWRT firmware for the RT-AC5300 router.

There aren’t any setup or configuration files available in the Linux system of the router. While you can adjust torrent limits using telnet and modify files, doing this would be disappointing if you relied on firmware from Asus or needed to reinstall an entirely new operating system.

You could simply keep the router connected to the same VPN profile, and run a VPN client on your computer whenever you need a different one. This way, devices that don’t support client software—like Alexa or Google services—will still have a VPN active through your router. Your PC or OS can then switch to a client app to adjust the VPN location as needed.

The VPN requirement is for non-VPN clients. PS4 and Apple TV are supported. I manage eight locations and need to switch quickly. Support from Asus didn’t help much. You require someone familiar with Asuswrt Linux details. Last night I spent time checking directories for OpenVPN config files, found the plugin install file but not the actual configuration.

Feeling like I have no other option. Attempting to prevent losing the operating system and reconfiguring everything again. However, it might be helpful if someone up there knows how to locate the OpenVPN settings since Merlin is essentially an updated version of Asuswrt.
