I've observed some smart devices connected to your wife's setup functioning well, but they're showing performance issues. The mobile data app works fine, yet switching to Wi-Fi slows things down significantly and sometimes prevents loading altogether. It seems like this isn't unique to you—many users might be experiencing similar problems.

They don't have all the answers. The most useful step is to disable wireless, disconnect all devices except one, and run Wireshark on that device. Check for heavy traffic and then reduced activity—this might assist. In Wireshark, navigate to Edit → Preferences and turn on IP address resolution. It’s likely disabled by default, so you’ll see numbers instead of text. On the left side of source and destination columns, you’ll find data like website names, helping identify which domain isn’t connecting or is behaving oddly. Another method is using the DuckDuckGo app with the "app tracking protection" enabled to see if it loads more smoothly.
