This claim isn't accurate. I upgraded without a Microsoft account, performed a clean install without one, and retained my activation—it remains linked to your hardware ID.

It would assist everyone if you reached out to support to confirm whether your license can be reactivated. If they confirm, things will be easier. Otherwise, you’ll need to reinstall Windows 7/8 and perform the upgrade once more. As long as it’s offered for free, there should be no issues. However, a full reinstall will require significant effort.
