LGA1200 vs AM4
LGA1200 vs AM4
I am planning on upgrading my CPU soon, which also means upgrading my motherboard. I have some questions about what my best options are. Do we know for how much longer Intel will develop CPUs for the LGA1200 socket? And is it also known for how much longer AMD will develop CPUs for AM4? If one is more 'futureproof' than the other it will greatly detarmine my CPU choice. ATM I have these two options in mind: #1: Intel i5 11600 + new mobo (not sure which one yet) + Arctic Freezer 34 eSports DUO Slightly worse option out of the two, but also the cheapest. #2: AMD Ryzen 5 5600X + MSI MAG B550 Tomahawk + new RAM + Arctic Freezer 34 eSports DUO The better option, but also more expensive. (New RAM because I read that Ryzen likes fast RAM) I would love to hear some thought about this. Thanks in advance.
Anticipate Intel's 12th generation release soon, that will give us clarity. If this version adopts a fresh motherboard design, the previous one becomes obsolete. Historically, Intel has followed a two-year cycle for each motherboard, so Gen 6-7 could share the same board, and Gen 8-9 would follow suit.
The most forward-looking choice is definitely AMD, as it supports a 16-core 5950X processor. Intel’s options are limited—either an 8-core 11700K/11900K with PCIe Gen 4 or a 10-core 10850K/10900K with PCIe Gen 3. It seems neither company plans to release new processors on their existing platforms, meaning the current selection may be the final option available.
