So smurfs can be a bit of a nuisance. People know that, unless you're the smurf yourself, you're wasting everyone's time. Still, lots complain about them, even me. The more I play, the more I see they're not as impressive as they seem. Or at least in my case. Here are a couple of examples: Once I was playing Nova 2 against a full team with an MGE. By the end, we had two bots on the CT side and still won... I thought MGE's were much better. Another time yesterday, I played Dust 2, started on T side, and got an AFK right away. Hate those bots. We had a bot since the second round against a team with two GNMs, two GN3s, and a LEM. They beat us 14-16... That really shows they're not great. What do you think about smurfs?

Because the VAC waves make it easy for less experienced players to reach MGE+, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with smurfs. To improve, you should focus on playing stronger opponents and study their strategies.

I’d rather not focus too much on rank. Just enjoy the game. I’m new to it and often get called smurfing because I score high on frag, but that’s usually because I’ve been practicing a lot. It’s way more fun when you relax instead of getting stressed out. Whenever I face smurf opponents, I try to pick up their strategies.

They often came up in my experience, making it quite an uncomfortable situation. Still, there were moments when I had to smurf myself. Not for fun, but because I joined parties with friends who were new and struggling against the matchmaking system that matched us poorly due to my higher MMR. When using a different account, they received fairer opponents and could play without issues. I tried to be patient and let my friends gain as much experience as possible.

It’s actually quite straightforward. A few individuals enjoy experimenting with b00ns occasionally, though they’re not very common. The classic “smurfs” were so exceptional that no one wanted to compete with them—they had to carve their own paths to find games. CS:GO high tier MM often brings in a lot of hackers, making it not always enjoyable, yet people still try to join. Dota 2 MM tends to produce poor quality content, and the quality drops sharply as you progress. If you’re around 6k, you might face matches with about 4k players (lower levels too), while 7K+ can connect with under 4k. The matchmaking is extremely problematic at higher tiers, and games become overly unpredictable. At 5k+, things remain fairly balanced but still avoid forcing you into tough, high-impact roles where you must compensate for weak team support. Many smurf players exist because current platforms don’t support serious competitive play outside tournaments. These communities are usually closed off, unlike the days when custom servers were easy to run and maintained by developers. Now you need someone reliable to keep the game stable across updates and bugs. Only premium services like FaceIT or ESEA exist, but they cater mainly to casual players who can’t commit fully to the experience.

I just want to note: If you're playing the smurf game, you're likely not as invested and probably just chatting around a lot. Source: am smurf.

I haven’t found many of them that really stand out, just really frustrating. They’re decent at taking down enemies but lack solid teamwork, then get upset and complain when they fall behind a group of Nova II players. I don’t get why someone would create a brand new Steam account just to smurf games you already own for free. If you want to play casually, go to casual—don’t mess with my games. Plus, it’s not a good way to learn; getting an instant headshot from someone technically stronger than you only happens when you face tougher opponents and gradually improve by playing against them.
