I’m trying out some mod content in Fallout 4, but I’m not sure which one it is. The issue involves two characters who are immortal, and one must kill the other to continue the story. They keep fighting endlessly, even after one dies and they just recover shortly afterward. I recall there was a setting option in the mod menu to decide if critical characters should be made immortal. It seems the mod is labeled “depravity,” and I think I can disable it on the console. Adjust settings as needed. Locate NPC IDs by name. Enter the required ID. Command setessential <ID> 0. Face it out!

You can retrieve the ID by opening the console and clicking on them directly.

You have two ID numbers. Should I provide the ID or the base ID? The values look quite alike. When I check the actor details, it shows the ID rather than the base ID. I tried entering “seressential 2a59bd2b 0” and received an error about the actor base not being saved. I then switched to using the base ID, but it didn’t work either. Frustrating! I just want to avoid starting over from scratch.

The IDs returned from interaction are reference IDs and aren't helpful here. The approach you described provides their form IDs, which are the correct values. Aim for minimal health, execute the command, and a single additional hit should eliminate them (avoid VATS).

Alright, I'll attempt it tomorrow. It's almost too late here. Updated: the baseID was supposed to be the number, but it didn't work. Possibly my syntax is off. Revised March 25, 2023 by Bombastinator

Yes, I ran the setessential command and there were no errors from the console.

Perhaps it simply required some time to handle.

Verify if the commands work. Close the console, then restart and use the NPC's ref ID (ID.isessential). Expect output IsEssential >> 1.00 or 0.00. If it's 0 and the NPC isn't killed, it may indicate an issue with the mod.

He eventually managed to end it for one of them and finish the quest. It was the usual video game scenario where you have to pick between just two awful choices, so it didn’t really matter which one.
