I assembled a budget gaming setup around a Z87 ASUS Sabertooth LGA 1150 board, equipped with 32GB of 1600MHz RAM, an RX 480 4GB, and an i5-4690K processor. Most components were either free or affordable. I plan to connect an old 2008 Sanyo 720p LCD TV via HDMI for my monitor. How well will it handle high settings like 60+fps in games such as Doom Eternal and Stray? I’m just checking if it’ll run without problems in Doom 2016, but I’m curious about its performance overall.
I tried both Doom 2016 and Eternal on an RX 480 with an i5 3570K. Both performed adequately at 1200p. There was a slight lag during loading new content (like monster breaking through walls), but overall it ran smoothly. I haven’t played Stray, so I don’t have any feedback on that title.
It should work fine, though a few graphics might need adjusting to around mid range. You'll notice that.
I'm considering whether to choose the I5 4690K or the non-overclocked I7 4790. I think the I7 has more threads, which might be advantageous even though it can't be overclocked.
Both choices are possible. It's unclear how much extra threads will benefit you. If your cooling is good, you might be able to use an i5 or even a high-end i7 4770k. However, keep in mind there were past issues with the IHS interface on that model, so you may want to avoid it.
If it handled Doom well, it should run Doom Eternal smoothly. Stray works at 720p, though I'm unsure about high settings at 60fps. The main concern is likely your storage type—SSD or HDD. An SSD paired with an OC would likely offer the best performance for your setup. My regular 4790 is fine, but I believe upgrading to an OC on an i5 could improve results in some games.
The 4690k seems like the best option since it can be acquired at a lower cost.
