I acquired a Thinkstation P500 at a flea market. It came with just the motherboard, power supply, and CPU. The processor is an Xeon 1630 v3. I installed 8GB of DDR4 2133 memory. When attempting to install two 16GB ECC sticks, the system refused. My problem is this: after turning it on, the fans spin and the front panel lights flicker occasionally, but there’s no video output. It seems the board doesn’t have any video output at all—it probably depends on a GPU. I’ve tried an older Quadro 310 and two different GT1030s, but the monitor still doesn’t detect anything. There are two PCIe x16 slots, and I’ve used both. The BIOS appears to work when a certain RAM setup triggers a beep during boot. After more than five minutes, a yellow warning light appears. Lenovo claims it’s in diagnostic mode, usually because there’s no boot drive. They say I should connect a USB for diagnostics, but I haven’t succeeded. I’ve used a Windows 10 installation USB and checked all ports, yet I can’t find any details about this PC or Lenovo’s support. Someone on a forum suggested rearranging some diagnostic jumpers, but that didn’t help either. Any suggestions? I hope the motherboard is still functional.
Have you attempted to clear the BIOS by taking out the cr2032? It could have caused an outdated and strange setup that prevents the system from starting.
LGA2011-3 boards lack built-in graphics, making a video port unusual unless an adapter is present. Registered ECC RAM should function with your CPU, though mixing it with standard unbuffered RAM isn't recommended. Running the system without any RAM triggers an error code on the power indicator and speaker.
I tried numerous solutions, but none helped. A spare motherboard I purchased on eBay for $30 came in today. Once I replaced it, the system started working properly. It seems the original motherboard was faulty.
