Top left? Delay in input detection was observed. This hasn't happened before. I've only seen lag in one instance, and it's completely absent now. It seems whatever is processing your inputs might be dropping out, consuming too many resources, causing lag spikes in your game. What device or software are you using to play?
Connecting to Apex Legends servers has been unreliable for me around the holiday of 2022 on the west coast. Sometimes using a VPN with Private Internet Access helps, but other times it doesn’t. Some sessions run smoothly with no lag or packet loss, while others have sudden spikes in performance. My device’s behavior hasn’t changed—traceroute shows consistent server IPs, and other games aren’t affected. This seems to be an issue specific to Apex servers or the BGP routing gear in their data centers. Thanks for sharing; just letting you know what I’m experiencing.
You can capture the game screen using the in-game tool (set keybindings under settings → mouse/keyboard, then grab the image from the provided path). The location may differ depending on the store platform (origin or Steam). In the video settings, consider enabling NVIDIA Reflex and boosting performance. If GSync is active, it will lower your frame rate to match your monitor’s capabilities. I’ve reviewed your profile—do you still have the i9-7900X? Generally, if you’re not familiar with overclocking, using non-consumer components comes with risks. Your CPU has only one core from a 7-year-old 6700K, and managing thermal output might require disabling cores or adjusting channel settings. This needs careful research. GPU issues seem unlikely; it’s more likely your software usage (background tasks) is overwhelming the old hardware. Windows 11 isn’t ideal for optimizing input latency on such a system. If you’re still using the 7900X, you probably have normal background activity that’s too much for your outdated CPU without significant tuning.
to kirashi: in australia the problem seems to lie with my ISP. using my own free vpn (oracle VPS) gives me no lag spikes locally and cuts international latency down a lot. elsewhere it might be different. Apex can be annoying sometimes—server delays, slow gameplay, poor audio, and so on. Playing against someone with high ping is like guessing the future. For BR mode, Apex’s hardware should run at full capacity. You could try switching VPNs to improve international latency, use another server for two games, especially during peak hours in your time zone, switch to quiet hours, or even use mixtape mode. The ping difference is massive. To OP: check the gameplay settings—gameplay → performance display—to see if FPS or network issues appear.
I wouldn't recommend upgrading your CPU right now. You're experiencing lag mainly in that specific game, while everything else runs smoothly. It seems like the issue is tied to this game's performance rather than your overall setup. Given you've already invested in a new GPU and it's still working well, a CPU upgrade might not be necessary unless you notice further drops in performance. For the price you paid four years ago, it should still support gaming, but keep an eye on the situation.
In addition to this, the FPS drop isn't linked to latency ping problems.
I believe the processor strength isn't the main concern—focus is on handling heavy or multi-threaded tasks, while dealing with its limitations in speed, heat, and stability. Given your budget, options like the AMD R5 5500 or Intel i5-13600k seem reasonable. You'll likely need to upgrade your motherboard to support the new CPU. How much are you planning to spend? And which country are you located in?
Because I don’t rely heavily on my CPU’s performance, I’m in a better position, but I’d like to upgrade eventually. I think I can afford around 500 for a new processor. I own an expensive mobile device I bought four years ago and wish to sell it both times to reduce the cost of getting a replacement.
You can still make a profit from them—they’re likely superior to what you can easily find on AliExpress. They’re ideal for those seeking powerful systems with high I/O needs. Are you in the US? With $500, you can comfortably purchase an upper-middle range CPU, motherboard, and even a new DDR5 RAM, depending on your budget. For example: a 13600KF + B760M PCIe + 32GB DDR5+CPU cooler costs around 520USD, allowing you to save for newer components or upgrade your existing setup. For instance, a Ryzen 5 5600 with the cheapest B550 and under $250 can work well. There are plenty of solid options available in the US, and the best choice depends on your specific requirements. All these setups tend to offer better reliability for gaming as well.
