Legacy titles struggling with current network setups.
While attempting to play older games from the 2000s, I often face sudden disconnections for myself and my guests. It appears modern protocols sometimes cut connections when data flow is insufficient. Playing in-game doesn’t seem to cause problems, but pausing, lingering in menus, or browsing can lead to drops. When I host a room, everyone tends to disconnect too. It’s unclear if this is connected or unrelated, but it definitely happens. Anyone have any insight? Your help would be greatly appreciated!
I checked the forums and found the details I need. It seems the Dreamcast was likely running on Windows ME, and there isn’t much more information available beyond that.
They mentioned similar problems they faced over the years. Once activity starts, it slows down and you lose packets until enough data flows. This isn't a client or server issue—it's related to your internet connection. Soda helped me troubleshoot the server side, and it wasn't its fault. Using Wireshark, I saw psobb data stopping until enough was sent, with lots of duplicate ACKs and resends.
It appears the method remains consistent regardless of using a VPN or not. Replicating it is challenging, yet it happens often enough to be quite bothersome.
PSO is genuinely my top choice. It holds many great memories and remains strong today thanks to its low drop rates for certain items. (That’s what makes it so engaging, especially with section-specific drops and more.) If you’re eager to dive back in, I suggest checking out Ephinea. They even have a special server for the non-blue version of the game. As long as you have a PC with friends around, it should work perfectly. I hope this message helps connect you with fellow PSO fans, even if it doesn’t solve your specific problem.
Hey @NinJake, that's the "other forums" I was referring to. The quote I mentioned comes from there.
If a network expert can confirm whether you have control over the situation, that would be really helpful.
