Legacy motherboard compatibility with M.2 NVMe storage options
I possess this outdated motherboard. I wanted to use a M.2 NVMe SSD for storage, but it says it only supports NVMe SSDs as boot disks. My current SATA SSD is 250GB, and I have everything on Windows 10 with all files installed. It boots fine from there. Would adding the NVMe drive in the M.2 slot work similarly (at Gen 3 speed)? Or would it just run the OS (like 10GB) without any extra storage?
It will feel like a standard hard drive—it won’t have any restrictions.
That’s a common question. An PCIe adapter is needed for additional PCIe slots, while the single M.2 slot on the motherboard is limited to one NVMe drive.
PCIe Gen 3 (x4) delivers up to 4000 MB/s, surpassing the maximum rate of the corresponding M.2 SSD, meaning you won’t face any speed constraints there either.
