LEDs on the motherboard cycling continuously
I just completed putting together my first PC, but when I power it up the LEDs on the motherboard begin cycling. They start red for two seconds, shift to white for fifteen seconds, briefly turn orange for a moment, then back to red. I assumed it was running diagnostics, but after leaving it on for about twenty minutes it kept looping. I attempted to enter BIOS to make upgrades, though my monitor doesn’t detect the GPU or the board. The manual says red indicates a CPU problem, orange points to a DRAM issue, and white suggests a VGA fault. It seems the system is running the POST test and restarts as soon as VGA fails. I’ve tried booting without the GPU connected, but the problem remains. Here’s what I have built:
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 7600X
- GPU: RTX 3060 Ventus 3X 12GB
- Motherboard: Asus ROG STRIX B650-A
- RAM: 2x Corsair vengeance 16GB DDR5
- Storage: Samsung 980 Pro 2TB
- Power Supply: Corsair RM750E
- Cooler: Cooler Master ML240 Liquid
What might be happening?
I’m not so sure what could be the problem, but could you re-seat your RAM and CPU? Since its your first time building, you probably didn’t seat them properly, you need much more force to seat them properly than you would think is safe, but don’t worry. Clips should indicate if its seated properly or not. (talking about RAM) After that, will the LED indicator change? EDIT: I might be wrong, but could you give a picture of how is your GPU seated too? Since VGA one is mostly on here.
I attempted that. The RAM was correctly positioned, but I still re-seated it. The same went for the CPU. The issue remains unresolved. Here are some pictures.
From what I see, everything appears normal. Try removing the GPU, accessing the slot, reinserting the card, and connecting the PCIe connector with the 8-pin 2+6 pin. If that doesn’t resolve the issue, the problem might lie elsewhere—perhaps the motherboard or CPU power connector isn’t properly seated. It could be the GPU itself. Have you tried testing on another system or using a different setup? Regarding the first point, it could be related to the GPU; for confirmation, check the CPU, then DRAM, and finally VGA. If it freezes on VGA, both CPU and RAM might need inspection.
Did you connect your CPU power cables and verify the debug indicator?
I managed to get it running without hiring a technician. A Discord group member recommended updating the BIOS, which my MoBo supports via an interface-free method. I also replaced a keyboard that wasn’t being recognized, cleaned the CMOS, updated the BIOS, and swapped it out. That fixed everything. Now I just have to replace a faulty fan that got lost during the swap.
