I started Vista from its release on a P4 2.4 GHz processor with 4 GB of memory. It was a smooth experience—no performance problems at all. I remember seeing Cpt. Chaos share a screenshot of their system running Vista with around 400 MB of RAM, and they’ve used it heavily over the years. That’s why I suggest they add their thoughts here.

It should be possible to boost that P4 2.4 GHz CPU to around 3.0 or 3.2 GHz without much trouble. Adding a few used RAM modules with a combined 2–4 GB would let you run Windows 7 on the system.

Windows 7 requires at least 1GB for installation. Even with that amount, the system may run extremely slowly.

I totally overlooked how much RAM he possessed, sorry about that. However, I think you're right—he should either upgrade his RAM or stick with Windows 7 and manage with around 256MB, or consider Linux.

Windows 10 doesn’t require the same instruction sets as some older processors, but the NX instruction set was introduced in Windows 8 and might not be supported on certain hardware. For an older machine, a lightweight Linux distribution is likely the best choice.

Linux might suit his needs well. He should consider installing Remix OS, which is Android-based.

I recommend Lubuntu too. It should handle parental controls and simple web tasks easily!

The installation appears to be causing more instability compared to Windows 7 starters 32-bit. There might be an issue with the setup.
