Latest connection issues with the computer.
I possess a Windows 10 machine from 2020H2 equipped with built-in Wi-Fi. It isn't connected to a wired connection and isn't conveniently reachable via cable. It operates in headless mode, which means I usually manage it through TightVNC. It functioned properly until yesterday. Now it's been relocated to a test setup where I can investigate the issue. It connects to Wi-Fi as expected, allowing internet access and visibility of other devices on the local network. From my regular desktop, I can't locate it by name but can ping its IP address. This works with a second desktop as well. On the affected system, network discovery and sharing are active. I attempted to disable Windows Firewall temporarily without success. It appears TightVNC is permitted in firewall settings. Accessing it via VNC using the IP address instead of the name serves as a temporary fix. It seems the device might not be broadcasting its name. At this stage, I'm uncertain. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Two recent changes have occurred since my last attempt to access the PC: a monthly Windows Update patch was installed, and the Wi-Fi AP firmware was updated. All other operations appear normal, and each PC has been rebooted at least once following the Windows Update.
Consider using a powerline adapter instead. Simply connect your Ethernet cable to it from your PC, and link it to another device downstairs that’s connected to your router. This helped me when you mentioned internet problems. Let me know if this works for you. Hope you find a solution!
I attempted that before. It proved much less stable than Wi-Fi ever could be. Could have been a faulty device, but I’m not aiming for another one. Wi-Fi is functioning properly now, while the Windows name isn’t working at all.
I believe the issue occurred once more, but now it seems Windows Update is likely the cause rather than my Wi-Fi firmware update. I have another PC similar to the first one with the problem, which is only connected via Wi-Fi. I turned it on and was able to access it remotely. It downloaded and installed the latest Windows Update, then I rebooted, but now it can't connect. Other PCs that were updated and connected to a wired network appear to be functioning properly.
I could attempt a full network restart to check its impact. Unfortunately, it won't assist right now since I'm playing two online games, so it'll have to wait.
