Hey there, I've got an MSI GT70 that I was planning to set up for trading or selling. The issue started after I refreshed the system by reinstalling Windows 10, upgraded the RAM from 8GB to 16GB, and added a 256GB Adata SSD drive. For a while it worked perfectly—running benchmarks, browsing the web, watching YouTube videos, etc. After a few months, I restarted it and now it won’t show up when trying to boot into Windows. It works with an external display. I’ve attached some YouTube clips to illustrate the problem. I’m hoping someone has encountered this before or knows what might be causing it. I’ve also tried re-seating the RAM and resetting the CMOS.

It seems the problem likely lies with the graphics driver, which Windows likely downloaded and installed. Check the BIOS settings and make sure the primary video is set to the GPU—my laptop used the Optimus feature.

Sorry to hear that. The current owner has created a password for the BIOS, and removing the CMOS won't erase it. It remains saved in the EEPROM.

You might consider a fresh Windows setup. The intermittent lighting seems strange. If the new install resolves it, that’s ideal. Otherwise, it could be another problem coinciding with this issue. I think you might have swapped an inverter for the LCD on a comparable laptop—still black but functional on a monitor. These older models are relatively easy to handle and repair. Hopefully, it’s just Windows acting differently.

I attempted to boot from your USB drive to reinstall Windows, but the screen didn’t show any progress. I’ve created a brief video to explain the steps. Let me know if you need further help.

The issue might relate to how the system handles different input sources. The inverter could be affecting performance when external displays are used, while VGA works smoothly otherwise. Checking the settings for compatibility might help.

You managed to launch the Windows reinstall from within the operating system, but after rebooting, you saw the standard MSI window and then nothing happened. The external monitor also failed to appear, though you could still hear Cortana.

Looking for a solution to have a screen ready for completing the reinstall?
