Remove the HDD from the laptop and place it on your desktop. Then move all the files there. If you have a case, it will be simpler.

You're asking about a freezing issue and need clarification on what you're saving. Just connect to the desktop (make sure it's not the boot drive) and then copy the content.

I connected the device. Accessed the HDD via My Computer. Created a folder on the desktop and pasted the drive there.
