Laptop 3050ti is showing significant performance drops due to battery problems.
I recently needed to replace the battery on my ROG Flow X13 GV301QE since it was losing power quickly, especially when the GPU was active. I assumed this would resolve the performance problems, but it turned out more was at play. The GPU temperature never exceeded 40 watts, which seemed like a power issue with the battery, but even after swapping batteries, the limit stayed the same. I’ve added many external devices to my laptop—monitor, keyboard, Bluetooth mouse, amplifier (with headphones or a speaker), and Wi-Fi adapter—to see if that helped. The situation worsened instead of improving. I’m concerned about the TGP cap at 40 watts, which I thought might be the main problem. I’ve reset the PC thoroughly, reinstalled drivers via DDU and NVCleanInstall, but performance dropped noticeably during Overwatch practice. I’m puzzled because when gaming, voltage stays between 610mV and 800mV, temperature stays under 60°C, and the frame rate hovers around 1200 FPS. The charger I used is 100 watts, another copy I bought also performed similarly. I suspect a software throttling issue rather than a hardware limitation. I’m contemplating a new laptop since this is really frustrating. I’ve spent nearly a month trying fixes but nothing seems to work. If you have any diagnostic insights, I’d really appreciate it—hopefully someone with expertise can help me get back to playing with friends. I might be missing crucial details, so please share anything you think could assist.
The GPU is limited to 40 watts at best. This might happen because the 100-watt charger isn’t delivering enough power when the system runs at full capacity, causing it to draw from the battery. Running 40 watts on the GPU plus 35 for the CPU reaches 75 watts, leaving only 25 watts for the screen, drives, memory, and other components. It’s likely the battery will deplete under these conditions. These laptops aren’t meant to stay stationary for long; a desktop would probably be a better choice. There’s no need to discard the laptop—just consider using it elsewhere if possible.
Verify the configuration to confirm the game is utilizing the dGPU. Many laptops with dGPU also use an iGPU for efficiency. Begin by reviewing the Optimus settings in the Nvidia control panel (Manage Display Mode) to ensure it’s active. Next, examine the Windows settings for that particular application. Go to System > Display > Graphics and check the app list to see which GPU is assigned. If the app isn’t listed, manually add its executable and set it to High Performance mode.
The game is definitely using the dgpu unless its lying to me, it says the graphics card that it is using in the video settings and says the 3050ti. Another issue I have is that Nvidia control panel shows me absolutely nothing and I don't know why, I haven't looked into it though, I'll put a screenshot of what I see And Overwatch is already on high performance setting.
