Lane Assignment for PCIe Connections
Lane Assignment for PCIe Connections
I was wondering if I could get some help with figuring out why my GPU is only running at x8 instead of x16. I have a Ryzen 9 5900x Paired with a Nvidia RTX 3050. My motherboard is a MSI B450 Tomahawk Max II. I have a PCIe network card plugged into the bottom most slot and an M.2 SSD in the only slot possible on the motherboard. My motherboard and GPU Z both say that it's only running at x8.
bottom lane allocation comes from the chipset M.2 connector, which provides dedicated paths. The CPU PCI-E X16 slot offers either 8 or 16 lanes based on the CPU—up to 16 with your 5900X. The RTX3050 card (and GPU chip) is restricted to 8 PCI-E lanes, regardless of slot capacity. This approach mirrors how NVIDIA designs chips, while AMD offers models supporting 4 or 8 lanes.
