When checking the specifications for the Ryzen 9 7950x, it lists 28 PCIe lanes with 24 usable ones. I'm considering using it in a project that requires fast networking and a network card that needs PCIe 8, while also needing a GPU. After testing various motherboards, partpicker shows that any PCIe 16 slots after the first are limited to x4 speeds. This might mean only one slot connects directly to the CPU, with the rest going through the chipset at x4 speeds. Are there any boards with multiple direct slots for the CPU? That way I could allocate 16 lanes for the GPU and 8 for a network adapter? I’d then route the NVMe SSD via the chipset and accept a minor storage slowdown. My aim is to stay within budget by avoiding a full workstation CPU purchase. Thanks!

Seek a board supporting x16/x8 or x8/x8 in the main PCIe ports. Any GPU works in an x8 slot. I’ve compiled a selection of options, including one from another thread, and here’s the info you need. Check the PCIe slots for x16/x8 or x8/x8 details in the Electrical column. Starting with Asus high-end models meets the requirement.

Which GPU will you choose? You might manage by using the PCIe slots in 8x configurations. Few GPUs won’t occupy a 16x PCIe channel anyway.

That's understandable. It seems hard to pinpoint the exact requirements yet. I'm exploring options for a modest cluster setup, focusing on consumer-grade components rather than dedicated servers. This could help achieve more cores within a budget while still needing some GPU support. I'm still determining the necessary specifications and deciding how many nodes should have GPUs.

What's the demand? For 3D rendering, using an NVIDIA GPU with CUDA is likely more effective since it offers broader support.
