I tried to push my CPU to higher speeds but faced problems with testing consistent voltage. My 8600k ran steady at 5MHz with 1.32 volts, and temperatures stayed within normal limits. Recently, while multitasking—opening Chrome tabs, switching programs, and using Windows Calculator—I experienced instability. The CPU would crash after launching three apps simultaneously, and it triggered a blue screen during rapid tab changes between videos and articles. My benchmarks like Cinebench and AIDA64 showed no issues, so I’m unsure if my tests were reliable. To verify stability, I need better methods to measure performance under real-world conditions.
Run Prime95 and Aida64 for a minimum of one hour. This is longer than five minutes.
I test Prime 95 for an hour to check stability. It's like hanging from a ceiling fan to verify it holds up—it's excessive but gives results. If it works for my needs, it's sufficient. Yours isn't, so you should tweak it. Just relying on benchmarks isn't enough.
Additionally perform stress tests where you can set the number of threads. Run tests from multi-threaded to single-threaded execution. Your CPU might handle full core usage smoothly at lower speeds, but performance could drop when cores are limited.
OCCT provides additional details compared to Prime95, such as power consumption and temperature per core. A small sample from the benchmark "mode" matches the results of Prime95 SmallFFts.
What Prime version are you running? I've been adjusting three of my systems for the upcoming 3080 and trying to figure out what stable means. My 8700k, 8086k and 9900k all hit 5.1Ghz with all cores at 1.30v or lower without any problems during games. Small FFT Prime95.26.6, Cinebench and a few others also function well, but when I load a heavier FFT in Prime95 303b or similar with AVX2, everything drops quickly. Cheers
