This suggests the port or connection might not be the problem. I also switched to a different cable on the keyboard, which still had issues, so the cable itself isn’t likely faulty. I examined the controller PCB to look for bad solder joints, but found none, indicating the keyboard’s internal components aren’t the cause. Since it uses all through-hole parts and a soldered DIP microcontroller, any hidden defects would be hard to spot. One possibility is the keyboard was drawing excessive power from the port or failing to receive enough power to start up. This doesn’t explain why it works perfectly once Windows boots. Another thought is a rare BIOS glitch—perhaps the microcontroller doesn’t properly communicate with the BIOS during startup, or there’s a timing issue specific to this model. I’m also considering that the NCT6798D BIOS might have a quirk only appearing at startup. My next move is testing this keyboard on other boards, especially older ones, to see if the problem persists.
