JRPG suggestions please?
Seeking fresh turn-based combat experiences in this region, hoping to find recommendations. Interested in titles like Yakuza Like a Dragon, Final Fantasy main series (7,8,9,10,12,13), Enchanted Arms on Xbox 360, Atelier Sophie, and the Neptunia series. Avoiding games with complex combat systems such as Final Fantasy 15, 16, 7R, and disliking JRPG tropes. Preferring story-driven narratives without heavy visual novel elements. Looking for something less retro, more modern in feel. Would need a balance between challenge and accessibility.
Looking for a recommendation, I think you'll enjoy Genso Suikoden II—it's a classic that many love, even though it feels old-school.
These titles aren't limited to PC only. Many of them are available on various platforms. The series you mentioned, like Bravely Default and its sequels for 3DS, have evolved the classic RPG formula and draw a strong following. Fans appreciate the depth and quality of these games. For fans of action-packed battles with rich storytelling, consider titles such as Nier Automata or Ys 8: Lacrimosa of Dana. If you prefer something lighthearted and easy to enjoy, Trials of Mana offers a fun experience without heavy complexity.
It doesn’t have to be PC; this place isn’t focused on general gaming discussions. I’d welcome PS3 and PS4 but exclude handhelds. My vision is blurry from mobile games, so smaller screens aren’t ideal for me. This is unfamiliar territory for me. In a brief, random review of a gameplay clip I saw, it seems promising. I just need to identify the English ones. I’m not familiar with the DQ series beyond a vague mention in Yakuza. I think I own an older DS title that came with it, but I never played it. The art style is unclear, but I’ll keep it on my list. From what I saw, the gameplay felt more like action combat. I really enjoy Nier’s worlds and consider Automata to have some of the best standalone soundtracks. Still, it doesn’t sound like something I’d want to play. It’s a great movie—I’ll watch it again. My last DQ experience was on the Sega Master System. Are there any solo titles in the Phantasy Star line now? PSO is definitely action-focused and could be a good break. I’m not completely against action, as I can handle it for story progression. Don’t worry about silly stories; they might even help. Thanks for the ideas—it gives me plenty to think about. It might be available on sale soon.
The primary Legend of Heroes titles are offered in English on Steam. This covers Trails in the Sky, Sky FC, and Sky the 3rd, plus Trails of Cold Steel 1-3 with the April 2021 release of 4. DQ shares similarities with FF in that the titles aren't linked. While some settings overlap, they're essentially distinct universes. The game 11 is entirely in 3D and features traditional turn-based battles. If the visuals remind you of something familiar, it's likely due to Akira Toriyama's work on DQ games. He also contributed to Chrono Trigger. Ys 8 stands out as the latest entry in the series, offering a fully 3D experience with quick combat that demands switching characters for specific enemies. It may not appeal to everyone, but it's worth checking out on YouTube. Berseria delivers action-packed combat, though battles are brief and mostly repetitive unless you're confronting a boss, which is typical for JRPGs.
