Joining a LAN gathering!
This weekend I'm attending my first LAN party outside my home. I'm a bit anxious about bringing my large PC to a public event because I don't want any damage. I still have the original box and the two Styrofoam pieces that protect the edges, so I was considering placing the foam inside the case again before sending it to the party. Is there any risk of static electricity if I put the foam on the machine? Besides that, I'm willing to try different ideas. For moving the monitor, I planned to wrap it in a blanket and carry my accessories in a backpack. (I know the PC has a handle at the top, but I don't want to scratch its sides...)
Never leave your GPU connected to the PC while transporting it. Also, take off any bulky heatsink that might be present on your CPU.
I own a car and I’m planning to place around five towels first (to cushion the impact) before setting up my PC inside the original box or wrapping it in many towels. I’ll put it on top of the rest and keep it in the trunk. My new car handles bumps well. Regarding the graphics card, it’s really not necessary to remove it during transport—even if it’s fastened with two screws, it should stay secure.
Your transport setup is okay. You’ll have to take out your graphics card since the PCIe slot isn’t secure enough. It’s easy to remove it completely and reinstall it later. You could also line the whole case interior with foam to keep the GPU stable, though that might require more effort than just pulling it out. Be sure to get there early.
You likely don’t need excessive caution. Just verify that all parts, monitors, and equipment are stable and won’t move or fall. Cover them with a soft blanket or towel for safety. Enjoy!
