I installed Windows 8 on my sister's Pentium dual-core machine. It’s consuming around 550MB of RAM at startup, much more than Windows 7 which used about 1.15GB. I got it together at the last minute—Dell Vostro 200 Pentium Dual Core LGA 775 E2180, 2.0GHz, Foxconn G33M02, 2x2GB DDR2, 800MHZ BFG Geforce 7950GT OC. It still handles heavy gaming well, as expected. I’ve been using it for six months now, but I’m starting to prefer Windows 7 more.

Windows 8.1 is an excellent operating system, but it was quite chaotic when it launched.

Absolutely, that's what I appreciate most about Win 8(.1).

I understand. After you grasp how Windows 8/8.1 functions, it really impresses.

The only operating system that comes to mind as significantly more optimized is Xubuntu 14.10, which I run on my Toshiba. With just 30MB of RAM at startup, it performs remarkably well. I’ve managed over 50 tabs in Chrome and played a game on Steam—even with a Core 2 T6400 and 4GB RAM—without any visible lag in the integrated graphics. I only used about 2.5GB of RAM during those sessions. That’s impressive!

Windows 7 is the three-legged pup, it might not be as quick as a four-legged one, but you still like it.

He isn't part of this group, sorry. Perhaps you could ask for help to get him involved. JK

It wasn't as severe as vista's error. Around 2006/2007 typical computers boasted around 2GB of RAM. Vista required about 1.4GB at startup and heavily taxed graphics cards with its demanding interface. These issues were eventually patched through software releases, though not completely. Still, it was the most significant setback I recall.
