I recently switched my router. In my neighborhood, many use 2.4GHz and all the channels are completely filled. Now I'm attempting to set up a 5GHz wireless point, but my phone (J7 Prime) doesn't recognize the SSID for that frequency. Do you have a 5GHz device?

This setup resembles a shared community Wi-Fi network where you can't install your own router. It's possible to have a 2.4 GHz network on the same channel as another user, separated by SSIDs. There could be minor interference if devices are nearby, but that's typical. Your device likely supports modern standards like 802.11a, b, g, n, and ac, as indicated in its specifications. It's unlikely to find a very old phone without a built-in 5 GHz radio.

These details apply to the Galaxy J7 (2017) The J7 Prime, launched in 2016. It supports 802.11 b/g/n, and since it includes an n card, it could potentially handle 5 GHz.

It might be helpful to be a little more polite, right? This forum is meant for people seeking assistance. Your phone doesn’t support 5GHz networks, but you could try downloading a Wi-Fi analysis tool and choosing a less crowded channel. As long as the channel isn’t too busy, your connection should work well.

Uncertain about your feedback, but I take it personally. I’m always quick with a retort. Also, based on the setup, changing the channel could lead to more disruption for both him and others, especially if his network uses standard 2.4 GHz frequencies.

He likely has a 5GHz radio because the phone supports the 802.11 standards and the J7 Prime model is compatible.

The N revision allows 5ghz speeds, but many devices don’t activate it. This was a planned feature for later updates. Wireless AC drove widespread use because the 5ghz range provides maximum data capacity.

It seems there are two versions of this discussion—one focused on N and another expanding to AC. @Liltrekkie is correct about using an app to explore available spectrum. He might also benefit from a hardware info app to confirm his phone's version or specific model.
