I was really interested in the 1950x but obviously lacked funds. However, after some research, I found that an E5-2650 V2 seems to match the single-core performance of a first-generation Threadripper. It also supports dual sockets and is significantly cheaper than a Threadripper 1950x or TR4 board. When compared to prices for Threadripper 1950x and motherboards, I think an older Xeon would be enough for my needs. I play games and currently run an RX 480 on a dual Xeon X5675 setup. The main bottleneck is only during heavy single-core or high-framerate games. Overall, it’s been great so far. I’m considering upgrading to an RX 5700 or XT. At 1440p resolution, it would likely suffice even with more threads. Adding eight more threads with similar clock speeds could be worthwhile, but the setup cost seems reasonable. What do you think?
