A few days back someone tried boosting my GPU with MSI Afterburner to test its limits. When I reached +300mhz on both core and memory clocks, the computer became extremely sluggish and unstable. After a reset, it took over three times longer to start—about 4 to 5 minutes—and many programs, including Steam and Overwatch, failed to launch properly. I’ve verified all my overclocking parameters and temperatures are normal, so I’m unsure what caused the issue. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Your system specifications include an I7 4790k processor, 16GB of RAM, a GTX 980 graphics card, and an MSI 787-G45 motherboard.

Considering MSI Afterburner and other MSI applications go further than just overclocking the OS, I faced issues bringing my CPU back to its original settings after using these tools. Have you tried removing MSI and using CCleaner to clear the system, or resetting the CMOS?

starting to consider that MSI Afterburner and other MSI applications go further than just overclocking the OS. Had issues bringing my CPU back to stock after using those apps. Have you tried removing MSI and resetting the system with CCleaner, or setting the CMOS?
tried both without success. It seems the components aren't functioning well together.
could it be that I've harmed the motherboard during the GPU overclocking? I didn't adjust the voltage settings.
is there any method to determine if the issue lies with the motherboard?

I'm not sure if it's the motherboard, but it could be. The GPU might be the issue, especially with the +300MHz memory being quite high. Consider removing the 980 and using integrated graphics instead.

Have you considered using a different PCI-e slot?
Edit: This is why I stopped trying OC, let the testers handle it—they receive the parts for free, and I don’t require additional power. If I had tried, I would have spent more money to ensure safe operation at stock.

If I had tried, I would have spent more money to run safely at stock. Tried another PCI-e slot and it hasn’t made a difference. It’s still running slowly.
