I previously shared information about how speedtest.net can boost download speeds using multi-connection mode. Many assumed it was just my ISP providing extra bandwidth for that service. After some research, I discovered that multi-connection to servers does indeed increase available bandwidth. My current connection is 50 Mb/s, which matches normal download/upload speeds on regular networks. When using multi-connection, speeds can rise to 100 Mb/s on speedtest.net. A single connection then drops to 50 Mb/s. However, tasks like downloading updates or apps can push speeds up to 100 Mb/s, and some sources suggest even higher rates. Downloading multiple files from browsing still uses the same 50 Mb/s limit. I realized that torrenting can also achieve similar speeds by sending data packets across many servers in parallel. There seems to be a specific term or setting for this behavior. It seems you might not be aware of your actual ISP plan—perhaps a 100MBit plan that’s unreliable in many areas could be causing this issue. Multi-part or multi-connection setups are involved. Refer to the link provided in the post for more details: Because you’re not, you’re likely overwhelming your internal network, but it’s probable most packets aren’t even leaving your LAN. The Gbit rate you see is only between your device and router.

No matter how it's marketed, if multi-connection supports 100Mbit, your ISP plan must match that speed. You can't push more data through than what your provider permits. It seems some ISPs have a way to adjust their profiles for sites like speedtest.net so your connection appears faster than it actually is. Or they might offer a boost mode that temporarily relaxes the speed limit during big downloads. In any case, this is something your ISP is managing.

It's not just quick bursts. For certain tasks, I consistently achieve double the performance. This isn't limited to speedtest.net—I can reach that speed while downloading Windows updates, updating MS Store apps, or during torrenting. I plan to inquire with my ISP about it.

Then as I think someone mentioned, there is either contention or a deliberate limit causing a single connection to only achieve half the speed. Its certainly not unusual, its why speedtest.net includes the option to test a single connection. In the UK we even have our own speed test site that specifically tests for this.
