Hello! I changed the graphics settings from 3700x to 5800x3d on my MSI Tomahawk b450. After playing some games, I realized my cooler (Arctic Liquid Freezer II 240) wasn’t heating up much. I checked with Cinebench multicore and saw it would only reach 90°C after a couple of seconds. After running it for ten minutes, the temperature barely increased, making it hard to tell if anything was working just by touching the cooler. Previously, my 3700x rarely went above 65°C, but I definitely felt the cooler getting warmer. I also looked at the thermal paste and noticed more paste on the cooler than on the CPU. Is this normal? Are the temperatures and scores okay? Why is my cooler still cold?

The AIO features a lot of thermal mass, which means it needs time to soak up heat before you notice it. Despite that, the leftover paste on your CPU and cooler gives the impression of minimal mounting force. Double-check if it’s installed properly.

The appearance of the paste indicates insufficient mounting force. Please verify your mounting and ensure proper seating and secure tightening with adequate pressure. The cooler may specify whether screws should be hand-tightened or tool-tightened. If it recommends hand tightening, apply the tightest possible force manually.

I considered it might be too delicate. I didn’t apply much pressure since I worried about causing harm. Once I reinstalled, I increased the force visibly, ran the tests again, and the outcomes stayed the same.

Checking the age of the thermal paste you're using. It seems like it might be a bit dry, possibly having been applied in excess.

Yes, you're removing the old thermal paste completely and putting on fresh thermal paste before reinstalling the cooler.

It's the kind of paste that usually comes with a plastic cover—just double-checking if you missed it! :3

Using isopropyl alcohol is recommended. It's a fresh purchase from Thermalgrizly, purchased yesterday. The photo was captured under low lighting conditions, which might have affected the result.

Check if the right spacers are used for AM4 and screws. Confirm you're adhering to the installation instructions, as this may be leading to sudden temperature increases.

For better clarity, I removed the old CPU and replaced the paste before installing the same cooler. I followed a similar process to the 5800x3d setup, and it performed well. During extended testing, it maintained temperatures around 4150 MHz and stayed at 90 or slightly lower. Wouldn't it slow down significantly if the cooler wasn't mounted properly? I think the IHS and its heat transfer capabilities might be the main issue. What are your thoughts?
