The X299 chipset is almost obsolete. The 10980xe performs well, maybe even surpassing AMD's DESKTOP Ryzen 9 3950x. AMD's upcoming Zen 3 release is on the horizon, and if you want even more processing power, consider an AMD Threadripper. Intel seems to be fading away now, while AMD continues to deliver faster and more efficient chips.
No official news has been released, which means no one is sure... It's three years old and it already holds its "trademark" for two CPU generations (actually two and a half). If Intel ever created new Extreme processors, they'd definitely update their chipset.
X299 has been around for a while and I don't see them releasing any new CPU's for it, tbh we should be surprised it had three generations it supported when you are normally lucky to get two generations of support from intel. Normally I would expect them to release a new chipset, socket, and CPU's sometime in the next few weeks-months, but given the way everything is right now, big rona, not being able to get 10nm desktop chips, consideration of using an outside foundry, etc. I don't know if they will this time around. It is very possible they may just be like screw it AMD has us beat for HEDT so lets not release a new one until next year when we can compete better and focus on desktop and mobile instead. One question I do have is what are you using it for, why are you dead set on Intel? I am no fanboy I just don't see why spend so much on Intel's X299 platform when Threadripper delivers better performance for less currently. Back when X99 was the high end I would have said hell yeah get that sweet sweet 6950X because nothing could beat it but now I have a hard time recommending X299 unless there is a really good reason you specifically need it
It sucks but you might need to get a new socket no matter what, I suggest the 10th gen Intel if you most have something now, or wait for 11-series but currently the other side has 3000 series which is on par and has more cores for less and soon the upcoming 5000 series or Zen3 which is probably gonna be the equal to the 11-series... Unless Intel mess up so IMO wait for Zen3 & 11 and pick who ever wins for the tasks you need em for? Honestly mate I have a 10600 and 3600 cannot tell em apart except for the shiny sticker on the case.
Everyone, it's about how mature and dependable this platform is. As a software engineer, that's all I care about. I've faced some issues with AMD in the past, so I don't want to waste time when I really need something. The current setup feels like a solid foundation for me. I've been waiting five years, and it's still the same—questionable if things will improve soon.
