I'm not expressing frustration; I'm merely a bit taken aback. My 5950X arrived today, so I placed it in after returning from work. The previous 3900XT seemed to be behaving strangely—after removing the old chip, it appeared the thermal paste might have failed. On the 3900XT, I was seeing around 80°C, reaching up to 4.7ghz during gaming (single core), with occasional peaks at 4.8ghz, but usually hovering near 4.5ghz. The 5950X uses Ceramique 2 paste instead of the Noctua variant, and my idle temperatures are significantly lower. Additionally, without PBO enabled, I'm achieving up to 5ghz on three cores under single-threaded load, maintaining clocks above 4.9ghz most of the time. The maximum temperature reached was 73°C. So, why is this CPU reaching such high speeds with PBO off? Or does the chip itself tend to run opportunistic frequencies? I’d be tempted to switch on PBO, but since I’m using a Noctua NH-D15S, I’m uncertain if that would be optimal. I’m running an ASRock X570M Pro4 board, which I remember has average cooling performance.

Its just running based on power and thermals available. You have enough room so it goes okay im going to try boosting to my max allotted speed and if temps and power allows, we will stay at this until they do under this load or for Intel theres TAO and its a time limit before it clocks down.

I turned off PBO in the BIOS, but I’m not sure if another system does the same thing. Still, I’m enjoying the speed.

Confirmed. 5.05 GHz on the 5950X is typical. Raising the PBO clock to 200 MHz+ can push it up to 5.15 GHz. The 5950X handles that.

I experimented with PBO a bit. The standard options don’t offer much extra margin, but I was able to push it to around 4.2ghz across all cores under heavy use for longer durations.
