The prices vary due to market conditions, demand, and regional factors. You might find better deals on older models or used units. Check online retailers, local shops, or consider refurbished options.

Wouldn't it be better to take the 9700k instead, as it seems more reasonable and it's also less expensive?

They cost a lot due to outdated Intel fans that demand premium prices for poor quality.

Typically, older devices that remain on shelves don’t have their values refreshed, which keeps them unused and in disrepair. Updating prices for the last few models isn’t worth the effort. Avoid purchasing a brand new 7700. Good deals exist for refurbished units on popular platforms like eBay. For instance, this item is listed here: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Intel-Core-i7-7...ition=3000 Even if it’s an auction, the value is likely to rise significantly. I wouldn’t consider buying a 7700/7700K at that rate. Consider other options such as Xeons. My LGA-1155 from 2011 was upgraded to an i7-like Xeon for better performance and cost-effectiveness. Search for models like this one: https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/...0-ghz.html

You shouldn’t feel obligated. The 7000 series relies on DDR4 RAM, which remains the prevailing standard for now. Considering this, the Ryzen 3 3300X offers comparable cores and will perform noticeably better in single-threaded tasks compared to older models like the 7700/7700K. At $120, it’s a solid choice for a budget upgrade. It looks out of stock at the moment.

EDIT: A more affordable option is the Ryzen 3 3100, though its clock speeds are slower; you can try overclocking to improve performance.

PCPartPicker List:
CPU: AMD Ryzen 3 3100 3.6 GHz Quad-Core ($114.99 @ B&H)
Motherboard: Gigabyte B550M DS3H Micro ATX AM4 ($94.00 @ Best Buy)
Total: $208.99 (shipping, taxes, discounts applied)

Keep an eye on this deal. E80 - 90EU for €270. This unit outperforms your 2600 by a huge margin, especially when pushed to overclock—significantly better core speed.

That point remains valid because the system is outdated, and upgrading to a newer chip can offer improved speed and efficiency at a lower cost.
