I have been using Format Factory for years without any trouble. I tried doing a fresh install but Windows Defender stopped me because it thinks the file is infected. Is this Format Factory actually broken? If it's not working anymore, what other tool can I try that works well and doesn't need much help?

I've been using an old version for many years. I tried updating once or two back but got problems. The newer version was all messed up. I wrote the author and never heard anything from them. This program keeps getting worse over time. If you want to use it, get a copy of an older one and test it in a virtual machine first. Don't touch the new stuff. I don't know which old version is best for everyone else either. I'm using 4.5 but won't recommend it. Just check other people who are on old versions what they say. I tried to install the newest one in a VM and it started up. But during setup, there were two extra apps that kept coming back. Then another app wanted to join. I took a picture of it. By this time, Windows Defender already hated something else that was installed before.

If you don't know what Format Factory is, can you send me a link? What exactly does this program do?

Format Factory is a friendly software tool for changing files into different kinds, and it can deal with many file types at once.

I've been using an old version for years. I tried to update two years ago and got stuck on things. The new stuff was really buggy. I wrote the creator but they never answered me back. This program has been getting worse over time. If you want to use this, go find a copy from before and test it in a VM first. Try not to pick the newest ones. I don't know which old version is best for sure. I use version 4.5, but I'm not going to say much about that one. Go check what other people who are using an older version think. I tried installing the latest version in a virtual machine and it worked. But during setup I had to turn off two extra apps. Then another app wanted to install too. I took a picture of this. At this point, Windows Defender was already getting mad at something else that got installed. Try avoiding the newer versions. Edit: HandBrake is a good choice if you need to convert videos.

Thanks, gardenman. I'm looking for a place to download old versions of software, but the popular site seems to have been down or not working well. My search is still going on!
