You're facing common issues with older systems and newer storage solutions. Yes, it's quite typical for older computers like your Dell OptiPlex to encounter problems when using SSDs. The instability you're describing—intermittent failures, disappearing drives, or error messages—can often stem from compatibility challenges, power management quirks, or aging hardware components. Restarting is a frequent workaround, but persistent issues may require deeper troubleshooting or firmware updates.

It's worth noting that both the SSD and the cable are brand new. The SSD is a WD Blue 1TB purchased from Best Buy about 4 to 5 months ago.

The motherboard feels quite old, around 12 to 13 years, and has been in the garage for several years. It’s possible the board itself may no longer be functional, similar to what happened with the hard drive and external drive I also experienced.

I tested them on my personal gaming rig and didn’t encounter any issues, but I’ll perform a few checks tomorrow or two to confirm. It seems I might have to switch to another machine.
