I reviewed a video where someone compared B650E boards and noted Asrock's PG Riptide B650E as a C-level model due to its 16 lanes versus the full 24. I questioned why PCIe only reaches 16 lanes and not higher, wondering what the difference is between 16 and 24.

All 28 lanes were monitored by the CPU on that board. 20 lanes correspond to the main PCIe port and the M.2 slot, both using Gen5 technology.

It means full PCIe 5.0 support requires every lane to be PCIe 5.0, not just a portion. If not all lanes meet that standard, performance could be limited. Even with Gen5 support, PCIe 4.0 might still restrict speeds.

It's unclear exactly what the statement refers to. The mention of PCIe Gen5 and GPU capabilities suggests performance considerations, but it's unclear what is being limited. Even a 4090 might not fully use all available lanes in Gen4 and Gen5 SSDs for everyday use. Next-gen GPUs are likely to support Gen5, and it seems unlikely a 5090 would be significantly affected by Gen4.
