I improved my older parts for "affordable" performance about half a year ago. My setup includes an AMD Ryzen 3 1200, an MSI GTX 1050 2GB, MSI B350-Plus MB, and 8GB of Ballistix DDR4 RAM. I can run mid-range games smoothly at lower settings, but COD MW is tough and FPS often drops with heavier titles. Now that I have a bit more budget, I’m deciding between upgrading my CPU or GPU. What changes should I consider and what parts would fit?
The processor will remain functional longer, though the system will still face challenges with titles such as COD MW unless both are upgraded. I recommend starting with a stronger CPU first, as that investment will provide better longevity compared to relying on 30XX series cards that may arrive soon. I’d keep an eye on the used market for a solid GPU once the CPU and GPU are upgraded. I purchased a GTX 1070 about a year and a half ago for $200—it performed exceptionally well. Having 16GB of RAM is also beneficial, but it can be addressed later after improving the CPU and GPU. Edit: Even a GTX 1050 Ti in MW might meet your needs, though you’ll eventually hit limitations with the CPU/GPU pairing.
The Ryzen 1200 performs poorly without manual overclocking. Its lack of cores and threads makes it unsuitable unless you adjust them yourself. For better results, opt for the GPU instead. Consider getting a 1660 chip—even if not a Ti series—and ensure your BIOS is updated before purchasing. The 1600AE is an older model with a 1st gen part number, while the 1600AF is the second gen version. The AE and AF differ; you should choose the AF model. If you can't locate it, a 2600/x would work well with a 1660.
I checked the 1660 release notes and found no differences in performance between the AMD RX 580 and other models. Both offer similar specifications and should perform similarly.
Can you tell us your budget Kind of difficult to choose something without one Generally speaking for now the 1050 as a budget card will do Your cpu tho The 1200 lacks ipc has a really bad imc and you can barely oc with it because it's FCLK is really bad Getting something around the 100 dollar price range like a 3100 or something a little better like a 3300x would benefit you alot in the long run The board with a bios update should work with zen 2 As for GPU if you want to upgrade something budget oriented like a 1650 super will be nice
A 3100 CPU and an 1660 graphics card would work well together.
