I've been using the 7700k since its release. I didn't overclock or adjust settings myself because I had limited experience with that process. The chip runs well with Asus's ez tuning or XMP, but it caused some instability during CSGO sessions (fps spikes). I was thinking about upgrading to a 9900k to boost performance, but while researching overclocking tips I managed to push the processor up to 5.0 GHz with a voltage of 1.32v. It passed stress tests and worked normally for about a month. Eventually, I realized a 9900k upgrade wasn't necessary since I mainly play CSGO locally. However, the core temperatures were high—especially with my tower fan cooler from Cooler Master. At idle it feels like a sauna, and running the fan at full speed (1700pwm) at 90°C isn't comfortable. Should I replace the chip or look for a better cooler?
No, reduce the clock speeds or opt for a better cooling solution to avoid spending $400 on CPU and motherboard just to get a couple of degrees cooler.
Delid recently tested a 7700k@5ghz with 1.325v using a Noctua D-14. At full load in Intel Burn Test with AVX, it reached 60°C under full load conditions. Ambient temperature was around 25°C. They're saying it gets noticeably cooler when the chip is throttled, but I don't think lowering my settings would be worth it since it could boost my FPS in CS:GO significantly.
You can dry out and obtain pure copper IHS for it if you prefer not to handle liquid metal. I’ve heard it produces the same results as lm.
It's a bit more challenging now. Still, give it a shot! You'll always find another cooler option later. The updated Evo 212 black edition offers good value and is quiet too. Quick step: insert the CPU into the delid tool and turn the screw until the top (heatspreader loosens). Remove the heatspreader from the delid tool and take out the CPU heatspreader. Wash the CPU die and heatspreader with isopropyl alcohol. Use a credit card or similar plastic tool to gently remove any excess sealing (optional, unless you plan to reattach the heatspreader). Carefully lift the CPU out of the motherboard (in the CPU socket). Apply thermal paste on the die (liquid metal is fine, but Kryonaut works too). Reattach the heatspreader and close the socket lid. Apply thermal paste on the CPU heatspreader as usual before installing the cooler. Secure the CPU cooler in place.

The 7700K remains a solid CPU option, and a delid can extend its lifespan with further overclocking. The process is straightforward and safe when you have the right equipment and information. Avoid standard thermal paste; opt for liquid metal from Thermal Grizzly instead. After I performed a delid on my 8600K, I achieved higher speeds at cooler temperatures. Prior to delidding: 4.9ghz at 1,38V with 80-85°C during testing. Post-delid: 5.0ghz at 1.37V with 65-70°C during testing.
