It occurred unexpectedly to my laptop display.
Today I was using my laptop with a TV linked via HDMI as a second display. The screen changed to the image shown in the attached picture. My ASUS ROG Strix G15 2021 experienced this issue yesterday too, but after a short time it resolved itself. Now the screen is broken and external monitors are working properly. The laptop has a 144Hz display; when switching to 60Hz it expands the usable portion of the screen. Only a tiny area at the top remains free from artifacts, and the backlight appears to function correctly. No damage was done to the device. I tried several fixes: power cycling, disconnecting the battery and pressing power, running without battery, cleaning or replacing RAM and SSDs, using DDU. I ruled out software problems by booting to another partition and even a USB drive. Any suggestions?
I’m focusing on refining these thoughts: The backlight seems to be functioning properly, so the inverter is probably not the issue. If it started unexpectedly, a cable problem is less likely unless there was a precise disconnection. I noticed several unusual problems at a company name that sounds like Smell—maybe that’s worth noting. Could the cable near the hinges be damaged? Does the display react differently when you shift the hinge or move the screen? A light tap on the back cover starting at the cable entry point could be risky, depending on the design of the display section. It might help to remove the backing from the display area for a closer look. If you check the BIOS and see if it cuts power, that could add another clue. When the issue occurs in Windows, try resetting the graphics driver with Win + Ctrl + Shift + B to see if behavior changes.
Hey there, thank you for your response again! I tried reseating the display cable again with no luck. Made sure it was firmly connected. I also tried jiggling the display cable (atleast as far as i can reach it before it enters the display) and nothing different was shown. It does not change either when the hinge/position is changed, nor when it is lightly tapped. I'm hesitant to pop off the back of the display. The BIOS looks the same, i find it pretty hard to believe it's a software issue at this point. I also checked if there were BIOS updates, and reinstalled graphics drivers, etc, no luck. Win + Ctrl + Shift + B only does what's expected
Sorry I haven't responded in some time; I haven't been on the site in a while. Based on it behaving the same in BIOS, I agree that it's definitely a hardware issue. Only other thing I can suggest is get someone else to disassemble/repair it or take off that backplate. Usually there's some type of cosmetic covering and screws around the bezel somewhere. Considering it was fine until you connected it to your TV, it might be the GPU and not the display...in which case I think you would be replacing the system board. Could you test with an external monitor, something other than the TV?
