It keeps cutting my internet off whenever I leave Windscribe, no matter how long I stay away from it.
hi guys.. i am really scratching my head trying to figure out what happened and why Windscribe is suddenly having trouble. I don't know what changed... for several years Windscribe worked perfectly on my Windows 8 computer and then it seemed okay on my Windows 10 computer too... then suddenly (November 2022) my internet connection completely cut itself off even after I exited out of Windscribe I still didn't have an internet connection. After some scared troubleshooting I ended up manually forcing a reset by going into the network connections panel, right clicking on "ethernet network 2", turning it off and then turning it back on and waiting until the internet connection caught its own feet and started working again. The internet connection troubleshooter program said more than once that there was a problem with DHCP. (you can probably guess from the ethernet thing but I connect to the net through an ethernet cable) I did try following all the troubleshooting steps given here including turning off the firewall, uninstalling and reinstalling windscribe (I am using the latest version of windscribe) ... and no good same problem with the internet disconnecting and refusing to connect again 😞 View: https://www.reddit.com/r/Windscribe/comm...ting_from/ In theory I could just keep following all those steps above to regain an internet connection I mentioned earlier but.. I'll be honest guys it is really scary for me when i lose that internet connection so i find myself fearing (quite possibly irrationally I know 😛 ) that i will never get it back but... well you guys all know just how crazy windows can act sometimes. I am posting this because i really don't want to give Windscribe up, i love the program but i do not see any other alternative for me unless someone here has a suggestion to get around this? I have followed all the suggestions here Windows 10 losing internet connection intermittently? Here how to fix it If your wifi connection keeps dropping out then reconnecting or windows 10 losing internet connection randomly Here the effective solution you must apply howtofixwindows.com 8 Troubleshooting Tips For a Slow Ethernet Connection In today's world there are few things more annoying than a slow ethernet connection. So much of our work and play requires a stable and fast internet connection so when your ethernet connection slows down to a crawl frustration rises. You don't have to sit about and wait for it to start... helpdeskgeek.com https://thedroidguy.com/windows-ethernet...ng-1219367 Alternately ... and I'll be honest Windscribe was super nice and ran this free promotion where i got to use its services for free for life (60 GB download per month ! ) which is why i am so sad about being forced to give it up .. but i would like to ask you guys.... are there other vpn's paid or free either way that you guys have had good experiences with in terms of not making you lose your internet connection whenever you lose it? Much as i hate to give up windscribe i think i am going to be forced to start looking at other options now assuming there is a better one out there that will not give my pc the same internet problems. Thanks so much to anyone who reads this and responds
In general, I never recommend any so-called "free" VPN service. They need money to keep running their servers and provide internet speed, often by stealing your personal info. Some shady ones were caught mining Bitcoin on your computers. Now they charge for the service, so getting free means you are lucky.
I stopped using them after trying a few out; they weren't properly uninstalled and I had to reinstall my Windows. I now use them through an internet router instead. If you can get them to work with a standard version of OpenVPN on your computer, that might be okay too. All these clients are different and have strange connections to the operating system that make the VPN work. When they add features like yours, which include filtering things, it also conflicts with antivirus or firewall stuff on the machine. Best to just run the actual VPN part if you can. It's not surprising that Microsoft updated something and broke the client. They seem to break almost everything every time an update comes out. If you are looking for a VPN, be very careful and think before reading anything. Most search results are paid ads.
It is strange how many so-called "best VPN" sites have completely unknown options at the top, or other common ones like Nord in their list, when people don't suspect it's all fake. Most major VPN services run with the public OpenVPN client. Since you manually install and configure that, you will at least know exactly how to uninstall it if problems start happening.
Thanks so much, Bill001g... that is a lot of helpful info. I really appreciate you saying that. (groans) Also, that's a great point too! It wouldn't surprise me at all if Microsoft updated Windows and now it doesn't play nice with Windscribe anymore. I completely uninstalled Windscribe off my PC and STILL have intermittent connection issues where everything works fine normally, turn off the computer for the night, turn it back on, and then wham... the PC cannot connect to the internet! That's the ONLY PC with this problem. All the other PCs work fine; no phones, tablets, or laptops have issues like this. The problems started recently when I used Windscribe. So now they are blaming Windscribe for nothing.
I contacted Xfnity/comcast and things vary usually. The first rep said something like "Nope, you're using your own modem, so I can't help you." (nice enough person/polite but didn't know much about it). Realizing that was totally different from what other xfinity reps say in the past, they called back and got a super nice guy who sent a "refresh signal" to my modem. Even though the modem isn't comcast or xfinity property. So for now I have internet access. I will wait and see tomorrow if I can still connect to the internet. If I wait too many hours before turning on the PC again, suddenly it cannot connect to the 'net.
Based on what Bill001g said though, it sounds like all VPNs basically suck and can ruin your connection to the internet or worse, ruin Windows completely so you have to reinstall Windows just like that! Man, they have gone downhill! I remember when I used express VPN... admittedly for one whole month out of the year 😛 each year because I didn't want to pay for an entire year (long story but I will tell it if anyone wants to hear it). It worked flawlessly without disrupting my Windows 8 PC at all back then. That was many years ago though...
Vpn is usually a fake interface left behind even after you uninstalled it. If your issue is with DHCP, the easiest fix is to stop using that feature entirely. First, turn off IPv6 support if needed. Then make sure your network card uses a fixed IP address instead of getting one from the router. You should pick an IP that isn't in the range your router gives out, but you can often just use something like x.x.x.250. Most routers start giving IPs at the bottom numbers and don't reach higher ones unless they are really full of users. You might also find useful info by looking at what IPCONFIG shows when things work versus when they break.
that's super good advice, thanks a ton! i will definitely do that... today when i turned on the computer, it connected to the internet but yesterday it didn't even after comcast/xfinity sent the refresh signal to my router. the pc was stuck for a long time while i tried all sorts of troubleshooting steps... windows' internet troubleshooter finally fixed it on the third or fourth try, but it was still happening over and over again.
The weird part is that when you click on the little icon in the lower right corner that shows your internet status (it looks like a little monitor with a plug connected to it), it keeps flipping back and forth between "no internet" and "internet connected." This happens for "ethernet 2," which is the same network that all the other desktop computers are on. Despite this, i'm still able to connect normally.
To turn off IPv6 support, would i go into network connections? Then find the icon for "ethernet network 2 realtek pci" right-click it, and click properties? And uncheck "internet protocol version 6"? Also, to use a static IP address, would i go into settings, then ethernet 2, and under "IP settings," click "edit," and change "automatic DHCP" from "automatic" to "manual"? After those steps, is there a specific IP address like 1.1.1.250 i should use? Or should i contact my internet provider (comcast/xfinity) and ask what IP they recommend? Again, thank you so much for all this help and advice; i really appreciate it!
Here are the right steps. You need to pick the exact same IP range as your current computer address. I didn't put in a specific number because there aren't many common ones, and some routers actually use very different subnets. You can check it by typing ipconfig /all into your command line. One really common one is 192.168.0.x, so if you are using that range, just change the last part to something like .250
again thanks so much... but I have some new info. https://forums.xfinity.com/conversa... are not giving them to regular business folks. xfinity says here: "Sad, home accounts can't get fixed internet addresses. We only give these to companies." I hope they just broke my dream and let me do it. They say residential people aren't allowed 😛 (I live at home) ... does trying for a static IP work if I am a regular xfinity resident?
That IP address comes from your router. I think you are using a router? If so, you own those local network (LAN) computer addresses. These numbers only work when your router is connected to your device in the house. Once the device leaves, these addresses disappear.
Oh, I figured that out! So, that is really good news. Thank you for being so kind. Yes, I am actually using a router too.
