It happens frequently on my system and causes frustration
Hello everyone. About two years ago I purchased this used PC. Here are the details: CPU: i5-9400F, RAM: 8x2 (16GB), DDR4 2400Hz, motherboard: Asus TUF B365M-Plus, power supply: Xigmatek X-Power 600W, plus a tiny speaker inside that beeps whenever it powers on. This causes issues whenever I clean, move, or unplug/plug something in—it won’t turn on properly, fans spin, but I see a black screen and no beeps. Peripherals rarely work either. I’ve tried fixing it myself, but it always resolves after a short period, usually within 1 to 5 hours. I’ve done everything possible, yet I’m still unsure what I did correctly or what’s causing the problem. It seems to work as long as it’s left undisturbed. During troubleshooting, I’ve disconnected all peripherals and cables (including the monitor), removed the CMOS battery, and repeatedly pressed the power button to discharge static. I’ve also tried plugging in new cords and checking everything, but the root cause remains unclear. I’m really hoping you can help me understand what went wrong. Thank you.
I verified both units and everything appears fine. I also tried booting without RAM installed, it beeped but didn’t post.
It's a low-cost power supply. I reviewed the cultist PSU catalog and it's an entry-level model. My assumption is inexpensive capacitors are used. https://cultists.network/140/psu-tier-list/
A lightbulb functions one day and then fries the next. After it has been operating for a long time, its performance becomes unclear. We’re uncertain if the issue lies with the power supply unit, but given our collective experience with multiple PC components over the years, this seems like the most probable cause. Since none of us have your computer, all advice is based on informed assumptions. Decide or skip.
