I have a strange issue and don’t know how to fix it. I bought a used PC from an old friend for around $300, which was a great deal and a solid machine for my needs. I’m playing games like GTA V, PUBG, Rocket League, Naruto UNS3D, and WarThunder. I expected stable performance at high or normal settings—GTA V ran smoothly from 70 to 100 FPS, PUBG and Rocket League around 70–80 FPS. Last night I played GTA V and suddenly the PC crashed. The keyboard would flash like a mouse, but there was no output on the screen or any noise from fans or power supplies. I thought my power supply was dead (it was 550W), so I bought a cooler with 600W capacity. After installing it, the PC still wouldn’t power on. Pressing the power button made the mouse and keyboard flash, but nothing else responded. I removed the RAM, hoping it would help, but it didn’t. Then I took out the graphics card and connected the HDMI cable to the motherboard—PC started working again. That confirmed the graphics card was the problem. I called my friend, who said I had the same issue and suggested replacing it. I installed a new RX580 8GB card, and the PC booted up successfully. Just to be sure, I reinstalled Windows and updated drivers. Now I’m playing WarThunder, which runs well on my system. After about 4–5 hours of use, the graphics card failed again. What could be causing this sudden failure? Any suggestions? I’m using my old GT 740 2GB GPU and not sure if it’s still functional. I’ll try some other games later.
doubt it kills? if hopefully there is nothing in the PCIe slot (motherboard to GPU connection). Also if the motherboard is toast or something, would not think 2 fine cards stops working just like that. Getting the full story from you friend, if something have happened to the motherboard or PC before. Checking BIOS and if there is something there, if an update is needed or not (could brick motherboard, when trying so as a warning). Also not anything related to the power from the wall? or spotted any other issues, to defects/problems on the board.
Thanks for your response! As I understand, he built this PC specifically for his office and equipped it with four RX580 graphics cards. He thought it would be a fun joke, but it performed well when he played games. He offered it to me, and after using it for about four to five months, it still worked fine. He didn’t play games much but handled heavy tasks like video rendering. I checked the BIOS and found no issues, so I’m considering updating it. I’m thinking about getting a GTX 1060 or 1080, but I’m hesitant to install it. He mentioned the motherboard is new and came out of the box, so there’s a chance it might have factory defects. The power supply in my house is solid—since I’m an electrician, I’m confident the wall power is reliable.
I purchased Gigabyte GTX 1060 with 6GB RAM and the drivers came installed. The two RX580 graphics cards were heavily used for crypto mining, so proceed with caution when selecting components.
