I went and grabbed a multimeter and checked if all the little leads on the ethernet tip had continuity with one another (having both ends of the cable on my hand), if however you can't do that, you should try a new cable since there's no other way of knowing. I did the multimeter thing as a home made test to see if all of the 8 wires were actually making contact.
Gigabit requires perfect connections because it demands the highest possible data transfer speed from these cables.
That's more involved, I used an external cable for that. However, to rule out your computer's network card issues, I'd attempt to connect the PC straight to the router and check if it has a gigabit connection. If not, the internal cable might be faulty or the connectors mismatched.
