Hello everyone! I see myself as a fan of PC hardware. Most of the time I have a system that’s more powerful than necessary, and it brings me pleasure. I spend a lot of time examining my machine beyond just using it. That’s why I aim for a stunning appearance. Consequently, I often buy top-of-the-line components, especially when I can justify the changes. I constructed my latest main machine in 2014 and kept the same X79 platform ever after. Additionally, I enjoy having several GPUs, which adds to the visual appeal. Back then, I chose a substantial high-end water cooling setup along with a powerful CPU and graphics cards. Here’s a snapshot: Since I haven’t made many updates, I upgraded from my original 3x R9 290Xs (due to VRAM limits) to two GTX 1080 models. That’s about it. I haven’t found a good reason to swap my Ivy-Bridge 4930k for something more valuable, especially since I mainly play games on my setup. The only real consideration was moving to an X299 + i7-7820X with eight cores and turning off H-series. But I couldn’t see the benefit of spending over 1000 EUR on that. My i7 4930k is a decent overclocker, though it lacks a solid memory controller. In reality, the top speed I consistently reach is 4.4 GHz at a voltage of 1.48V – not necessarily above average right now. I noticed in a video that my 4930k still works well with two 1080s, and the 4K display makes a noticeable upgrade less obvious. I’m curious when it’s time to retire this configuration and switch to newer hardware for better performance, processing power, and memory. Still, the video suggests that if Linus decides to release a series with the strongest single GPU of each generation, it could help determine when CPU upgrades become worthwhile...
I upgraded from a 4770k @4.4ghz to an x5670 @4.6ghz and didn<|pad|>'s see no noticeable change with a 1080. I believe it should hold up for several years, and you can always use a PCI-E M.2 adapter if needed.
It has become obsolete since AMD released Ryzen, Threadripper and EPYC.
I'm still figuring things out here. Five years feels like a long time for PC parts, and I'm concerned about potential failures, which would be even worse. The M.2 SSD issue doesn't really worry me much. I'm pretty sure I won't notice any improvement in gaming compared to a standard SATA SSD.
A system feels outdated when it struggles to meet your needs. For some, it's every couple of years; for others, every seven or more. If you purchase a top-tier machine and upgrade the graphics cards over time, it will remain functional for many years. Today's computing power comes mainly from the graphics cards, not the CPU. Those who handle multi-threaded tasks or require large amounts of RAM gain advantages from upgrades due to increased cores and memory. For most users, replacing the graphics card every two to three generations provides sufficient improvement for gaming and streaming or other demanding activities.
AMD has finally taken a stance. Threadripper and Epyc are essentially the same product—Threadripper is a simplified version of Epyc. AMD is also now offering ECC support on higher-end systems. Intel has been supporting ECC and other enterprise-grade hardware for some time. For the original poster: if you feel outdated, consider getting a used Intel Xeon E5 or E7 board. Keep the X79 if you can, since DDR4 pricing is currently extremely high!
I’d stick with this 4930k until the next 10nm chip launches in October. The Ice Lake 10nm 8c/16t mainstream processor aimed at the z390 chipset could be a solid upgrade, offering 16 threads on Ring Bus and top IPC with clocks over 4GHz.
