Hey everyone, after I switched my case and PSU, my PC briefly powers on with no screen for a moment, then shuts off again in about two seconds. It keeps repeating this cycle, which is definitely affecting my retro setup of an Intel Duo 2600 with 2 GB RAM and an NVIDIA GeForce 6610 XE. The system power is running at 600W with an 80+ Bronze non-modular PSU. VID_20230715_122800.mp4
If theres a BIOS speaker whats the bios alerts? if you get an audible warning google the sequence with the bios manufacturer.
I’d thoroughly examine the situation and check for issues like a loose CPU fan header cable or mismatched RAM. Re-seat the RAM; if the CPU overheats or the fan speed drops below the minimum RPM in BIOS, the system will shut down. Cleaning the fan and applying fresh thermal grease is the fastest way to remove old residue—use nail polish remover or acetone on a coffee filter to clean both the bottom of the CPU fan and the heat spreader. Keep the solvent away from any heat sources—it’s highly flammable.
The equipment seems quite outdated... it might be wise to take everything out and inspect the motherboard for any bulging caps or burn marks. Perform a thorough cleaning—avoid direct vacuum use, but you can gently brush and employ a vacuum at about 15-20cm distance to remove dust.
I reviewed the creator's video and noticed the CMOS battery appears damaged. If that's the case, the checklist is likely needed. Should I reset the desktop time via the Windows time server? A faulty CMOS battery could cause the BIOS to revert to factory defaults, possibly altering CPU fan speed. Inspect the capacitors on the left of the CPU fan—they look like they might be swollen (avoid touching). If they bulge, the motherboard may be compromised unless you can precisely re-solder identical parts. Another point I missed is the power supply unit itself; if it's failing, it could lead to further issues and is best avoided. A failing PSU may produce loud noises, burning smells, or intermittent power problems.
I got the PC up and running. However, each time it powers on I see a warning saying the system fan has stopped working and to service your computer. Pressing f2 keeps the fan spinning, but when I do it, it boots normally.
