Issues with Windows shortcuts
Occasionally the icons on your desktop disappear when you boot up your PC, and it happens frequently. This is really frustrating. Anyone have any ideas on how to resolve this issue? You're running Windows 8.0 64-bit.
Nvidia GeForce GT 750M with 4GB GDDR3 RAM, using drives from around December 2013
I own a GeForce 260, a Quadro NVS 160M, Intel integrated graphics HD4400, and I haven’t encountered this problem. It would have been noticeable if I had. When installing Nvidia drivers, go to advanced and check the box for a clean install. As you proceed, uninstall all Nvidia 3D-related software—most people don’t have the setup. I usually remove everything except audio and video drivers for the GPU.
Do you have any third-party applications aimed at modifying your desktop? For instance, I use Stardock Fences 2.0 and Rainmeter, and sometimes they malfunction, causing my icons to appear messed up or overlapping. These situations are uncommon, the latter only occurring twice in the past eight months. Another potential reason could involve outdated or conflicting drivers. Having several drivers for the same card has led to problems where one is active during startup and another replaces it afterward, resulting in temporary fixes that disrupt everything. This issue has only been seen once in my experience and has happened about nine times during repairs over five years.
I'm not using any third-party applications. I'm also not operating the Windows shell feature.
There are several factors affecting performance, including outdated drivers causing significant lag and low frame rates. Updating to the latest drivers can improve stability, but older titles like Need for Speed Most Wanted (2005) still struggle with around 20 FPS even after the newest updates.
Are you referring to all past games? With a 765M and 2GB RAM, a slightly less powerful card works fine. The frame rate problems usually occur with older titles. Try using compatibility mode for those games—it might resolve the lag.
