Hello, I recently received components to upgrade the cooling and overall performance of a pre-assembled Dell XPS 8940. The installation process went well, and the setup was completed relatively quickly. However, an unexpected problem arose when the system suddenly shut down and restarted, as if a reset button had been pressed. Power remained on, no components were powering off, the debug LEDs displayed normal boot patterns for the motherboard, and the machine launched into the Windows login screen.

This issue hasn’t occurred during gaming sessions or under heavy loads, and I haven’t been able to consistently reproduce it. The most consistent occurrence was when the problem appeared twice in succession while installing NVIDIA GPU drivers. Interestingly, unplugging my Razer Kraken receiver before retrying allowed the drivers to install successfully. It might be a coincidence, but it’s worth considering.

The issue doesn’t seem to happen when I place the parts back into the original Dell case, though I’m not entirely sure. I suspect it’s related to the motherboard, but I need your advice and guidance through this challenge. Thank you for any suggestions.

tried setting up the build on a breadboard? if it functions outside either case and in older versions but not new... seems like the issue is with the case. It could be something causing a short circuit maybe. Check for any loose screws that might be rattling around, for instance.

I haven't attempted breadboarding. I plan to try it tomorrow after running memtest83 again overnight.

I've been keeping the PC running inside the case without restarts for some time, but I'm hesitant to say it's definitely the cause since the restarts weren't consistent. Could you tell me if there are any possible reasons why the case might be contributing to this issue? I'm not familiar with this being a common problem.

Short circuits may occur due to standoffs placed incorrectly. Each standoff in a PC case must align with the matching hole on the motherboard. If this alignment is missing, a short will result.

Hey everyone, I returned the motherboard and upgraded both my CPU and the motherboard. It hasn’t been an issue since then. The problem was likely with the motherboard itself.
