I recently purchased a Samsung 850 EVO and transferred my operating system from an HDD (WD Caviar Black 1TB) to an SSD. Before that, I used ofcourse to back up my data from the HDD. Since the HDD was divided into two partitions, I moved all my large files from the C drive (still on HDD) to the H drive (same HDD). Next, I cloned the C drive to the SSD and attempted to format the old HDD, but that wasn’t feasible. I also tried deleting everything from the old C drive (HDD), though it didn’t work completely—many files were removed. Now I’m facing issues where Windows File Explorer and Task Manager frequently close unexpectedly. It seems like the system refreshes briefly, then the taskbar vanishes for a second before tasks flicker and the explorer shuts down, even when active. My concerns: how can I resolve this without a full Windows reinstall? Can I format a drive that already has an OS (Windows 8.1)? If you have more details, please let me know right away!!! Your specs: i5 4670K @ 4.1GHz, Gigabyte G1 Sniper Z87, Corsair CX750M, 16GB Corsair Vengeance RAM, WD Black 1TB, Samsung 850 EVO 250GB, Samsung 840Evo 120GB, MSI GeForce GTX 770.

Click the Windows icon in the lower-left corner, go to Disk Management, select the drive, click Delete, and remove the volume. You can then format it as needed.

We completed a fresh windows setup. Many non-essential files were removed, and the issue was resolved.

Hey Yash, It is always recommended to clean install a OS because cloning causes many times the SSD to be treated as a HDD missing out the important features such as TRIM. Also it involves risks with compatibility and drivers. I'm sorry to hear about the data loss. You might have been booting from the HDD instead of the SSD and thus not being able to format the boot partition (simply because you are booting from it). A possible solution might have been to boot from the SSD while the HDD is not plugged in, then connect the HDD externally and format/delete the old C partition. Also always remember to fix the boot order after you move/clone/restore/reinstall the OS from one storage drive to another. Captain_WD.
