Issues with upgrading the SSD on ASUS VivoBook Q200E.
You recently shared your experience on Neowin and encountered an issue with booting to the USB drive. The problem seems to be that the PC jumps straight into the BIOS upon startup, despite using USB bootable media. You've tried changing the boot order, creating multiple USB drives, and testing different ports. The solution might involve using a different method to prepare the bootable USB or ensuring the correct firmware settings are applied. Consider using WinToFlash to generate a bootable disk and test with PowerISO if needed.
Some motherboards aren't compatible with USB booting. It's possible such a current board isn't, but you could test by connecting the SSD to a desktop and installing an OS, then relocating the drive back to the laptop. The BIOS often resets if it can't find a boot service. This issue can also occur with boards using Legacy USB or similar setups. As a precaution, remove any additional USB peripherals like mice and keyboards. Microsoft offers a tool for USB installations—visit their site for details. It supports Windows 8 as well. Good luck!
Thank you for the link! I usually stick to Microsoft software. Regarding compatibility, others have installed SSDs on this model, but I’m unsure about their setup process. Installing the OS from another machine might be worth considering. Drivers shouldn’t be a major concern when installing Windows 7 via the desktop. Either way, I’m ready to try it now. No risks, plenty of time!
Avoid installing drivers or performing a Windows update when transferring the OS to another desktop.
I recently finished setting up Widnows 7 on the SSD. As noted by killerx525, I skipped the installation steps and just plugged it into the Vivobook. It didn’t work at all. I’m really puzzled—this seems like the weirdest issue I’ve faced, and there’s very little guidance available for this particular setup.
Another thought: Right now I’m open to setting up Windows 7 or 8. Maybe I’ll even choose 8 because of the touchscreen and its connection to my online accounts. Anyone have any tips on a safe way to recover my Windows 8 password? Unlike many systems, it doesn’t display the key on the bottom of the machine.
Yes, similar to when it requests the date, time, keyboard shortcuts, and details about the computer.
The sole copy I possess of Windows 8 is the one stored on the 500GB hard drive included with the computer.
